Dairy Queen has been accused of using an ingredient that was not on the label of its dairy products.
The company said it was “shocked” to learn of the allegation.
Dairy Queen said it “has never used any genetically modified ingredients in any of its products.”
“We have no plans to use genetically modified foods in the future,” the company said in a statement.
“We are cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration on this matter and are taking all steps to provide the best possible food safety experience for consumers.”
The accusations came as a report from the Consumer Reports Consumer Health Index showed that Americans are consuming more genetically modified and pesticide-laden foods than they used to.
The survey showed that nearly 80 percent of respondents said they would avoid genetically modified crops if they could.
The food industry has repeatedly said that GMO foods pose no risk to consumers.
But some scientists have said that using genetically modified organisms in food can be risky because they may not be able to tell what’s in them, making them susceptible to harmful side effects.
Scientists say that the use of GMOs can be a way to boost crop yields and reduce the amount of pesticides needed to grow crops.
