The world’s biggest supermarket chain is preparing to avoid a future milk shortage by introducing new products that include ‘Nevergoin’ into a shop evergreen cheese bar and a new milk-based drink.
The chain, which has a combined retail footprint of more than 2,000 stores across the UK, has started trials of ‘NeverGoin’ Dairy Bar and Milk Bar at a total of 10 of its stores.
The new milk bars and drinks are designed to help prevent shortages in the UK and beyond.
“We have been working closely with the industry, working closely on this, and the dairy industry to ensure that our dairy products meet the highest standards,” said a spokesman for The Tesco Group, which owns and operates almost 3,000 UK supermarket chains, including the likes of Boots and Morrisons.
Nevergoins Dairy Bar is a milk bar that is made from fresh milk and is intended to prevent dairy herd deaths.
It will be sold at The Tescon Centre, The Harrods in the capital, Birmingham, as well as at the UK’s biggest supermarkets.
Kline Dairy Bar, which also owns and runs a network of more 300 stores across Britain, is a dairy bar that contains no milk at all.
Whilst Nevergoin Dairy Bar has been tested in supermarkets in England, it is expected to be tested in stores in the rest of the country.
Whilst milk is produced from cow milk, milk is extracted from the fat of cows’ heads and tails, rather than from the milk itself.
Whole milk is milk that is unprocessed, or non-pasteurised, which is also derived from cow.
“It is a combination of the two, meaning that the product has never been pasteurised,” said Dr Nick Williams, from the University of Exeter.
Once the trial is complete, Nevergoins Milk Bar will be made available to the wider supermarket and the wider food industry, and will be available for sale in the stores across Europe and beyond in March 2018.
“In terms of the milk, the main issue is how much it’s going to contain.
We’ve looked at the milk in terms of flavour and the milk quality, so we’ve looked closely at milk quality and the quality of the animal, and we’ve tested it, and if we’re satisfied with it, we’ll put it on shelves,” Dr Williams said.”
And if it does get into the supermarket, we will start making it available there.”
“The milk is made of milk, which means that it’s a blend of milk and animal fat, which are very different things.
We think that it’ll be really useful in terms in the future of milk.”
Klines Dairy Bar will also have a new ‘Never Goin’ Cheese Bar, available in March at its UK retail stores.
It is made using raw milk, aged for at least 18 months, with added fat.
“The new Never Goin cheese bar has a flavour that’s quite different to the milk cheese bar, and has a slightly different texture to the cheese bar,” Dr Wilson said.
There will also be a milk-free drink, ‘Never’ Milk, available at The Kline Dairy Centre in Birmingham, which will be marketed as an alternative to milk bars.
“For this trial we’ve found that a lot of people who are allergic to milk might be interested in a milk drink that has a similar taste and texture, but is less milk-like,” Dr Jones said.
The new products are intended to be used by adults and children over the age of 12.
“Our trial found that adults and kids over 12 who liked the milk-and-fat product, would like to see a milk and cheese bar as part of their daily diet.
This product will be one of the few dairy bars that people will be able to buy in the long term, as we’re introducing it at a later stage,” Dr James added.”
We’re also seeing some people are keen to try out the product in a local supermarket.”
What we’re really trying to do is help people understand the milk and the products we offer, and that’s really what we want to help people do, is understand the product.”‘
